Paste this into Terminal. It downloads the app, checks it against the published checksum, and installs it to Applications. It opens straight away — no security warning to click through.

Why a Terminal line?

macOS attaches a “quarantine” flag to anything a browser downloads, and refuses to open a quarantined app that Apple has not notarized. Notarization needs a paid Apple Developer account, which this early build does not have yet.

curl does not set that flag, so the app opens normally. Nothing is disabled and no system setting is changed — it is simply not the browser download path. Homebrew, rustup and Deno all install this way.

The installer verifies the download against the SHA-256 below before installing, and refuses to install anything that does not match.

Not scanned by Apple

Notarization would additionally have Apple scan the binary. This build has not had that, and the page says so rather than implying otherwise.

Or trust nothing

The whole app is on GitHub. Build it yourself and there is nothing to take on faith — locally built apps are never quarantined either.

Which build do I need?

Apple menu → About This Mac. The Chip line says either Apple M-something or an Intel processor.

Apple silicon · M1 and later

This build. Native arm64.

Every Mac Apple has sold since late 2020. The installer above and the disk image below are both this build; it runs natively with no translation layer.

Intel · 2020 and earlier

This build too. One universal image.

The disk image carries both an arm64 and an x86_64 slice, so it opens natively on an Intel Mac with no translation layer. The honest caveat: we build on Apple silicon, so the Intel slice was verified by running the full test suite and rendering every screen under Rosetta — not yet on Intel hardware. If anything misbehaves on yours, write to support@onzira.com and it gets fixed first.

If you would rather not use Terminal at all. Because this arrives through the browser it will show “VolumeLens Not Opened” the first time, and you need the extra step below once.

  1. Open the disk image and drag VolumeLens to Applications.
  2. Launch it. macOS will show “VolumeLens” Not Opened.
  3. Follow the four-step picture guide below — Done, then System Settings → Open Anyway. It takes under a minute and happens only once.

Check a manual download with shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/VolumeLens-1.0.3.dmg. The one-line installer does this for you.

If you see “VolumeLens Not Opened”

This appears the first time you launch a copy downloaded in a browser, because this early build is not yet notarized by Apple. It looks alarming; the fix is four clicks, once. The one-line installer above never triggers it.

Step 1

Click Done — not Move to Bin

This warning is macOS's standard response to any app Apple has not notarized; it is not a scan result. Move to Bin would delete the app, so click Done and carry on.

Step 2

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security

From the Apple menu choose System Settings, then pick Privacy & Security in the sidebar and scroll to the Security section at the bottom.

Step 3

Click Open Anyway

Security now shows “VolumeLens was blocked to protect your Mac”. The Open Anyway button next to it is the override macOS itself provides for exactly this case.

Step 4

Confirm once

Approve with Touch ID or your password. VolumeLens opens, and from then on it launches like any other app — this whole dance happens only once.

Prefer Terminal? One line does the same thing by clearing the download flag: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/VolumeLens.app. Verify the SHA-256 above first either way.

Build it yourself

The whole thing is open to read. An app you compile is never quarantined, so this route has no warning either.

Needs the Xcode Command Line Tools (xcode-select --install) and Swift 6. The same command builds what we ship.

Before you install

What it can read

Only the folder or volume you pick, and only names, sizes, dates and kinds. The scan never opens a file; the Applications screen reads one file per app, its Info.plist, and nothing else.

What it changes

Nothing, unless you select items and confirm a move to the Trash. There is no permanent delete anywhere in the app.

What it sends

Nothing. There is no network code in the app. Turn off Wi-Fi and everything works.
